2021 - Brisbane City Council - Core Public Art Collection - Maintenance of Public Art Trial Two
Cultural Asset Services was contracted from September 2020 to June 2021 to conduct a ten-month maintenance trial program for the 195 artworks in the Brisbane City Council’s Core Public Art Collection. The collection is diverse in its artistic scope, material types, sites and locations, providing logistics and skills-based challenges. During the project CAS trialed a suite of maintenance services across the collection - ranging from regular cleaning and inspection to full restorations.

Brisbane City Council has been proactive in the area of public art maintenance for a number of years. The Maintenance of Public Art -Trial Two conducted by Cultural Asset Services is a part of Council's strategic implementation of a permanent, long-term maintenance program for the Core Public Art Collection.
2020 - Brisbane City Council - Core Public Art Collection - 2019/2020 Restoration Program
In April and May 2020 Cultural Asset Services performed maintenance and restoration works on four public artworks in the Brisbane City Council's Core Public Art Collection. The artworks, located in city parks, were made from a range of materials with varying finishes, requiring individual specialist restoration.

'Gates of Heaven' by Wendy Mills (1990)
This electroplated stainless-steel sculpture has remained in good condition for the thirty years it has been in commission. Rust transfers, and some abrasions from lawn-maintenance equipment were treated and the sculpture was cleaned and polished.
'The Bronze Canoe' by Sean Tapner (1997)
The cast bronze canoe - and the collection of indigenous fishing equipment and catch inside the canoe - was high-pressure cleaned, buffed, hot-waxed, and polished. Minor structural alterations were made to drainage points inside the canoe and the concrete plinth to improve water drainage from the canoe.

'Red Sticks' by Adrian Davis (2009)
'Red Sticks' consists of 20 x 3 metre high galvanised steel posts set at angles in a garden bed. Within the red-painted sections, galvanised areas of differing sizes create a rhythm against the background of the park and the city. This work required a complete repaint including the excavation of posts to base-level and the application of a two-pack polyurethane paint system and anti-graffiti coating system to refresh and protect the vibrant colours and surfaces.
'Primordial Trees' by Simone Eisler (2009)
Five formed concrete tree-forms are set in garden beds either side of a pathway entry to the park. These shapes, made of 'ciment fondue' over steel armatures were generally in good condition. The works were cleaned and minor repairs made to a broken 'leaf' shape and the removal of small amounts of surface rust emerging from the armatures. Artist Simone Eisler was on hand to repaint the five sculptures and to detail and repaint the subtle feature colours on some of the trunk forms.

2019 - 'Bird Poles' by Hollie (1997) - Full Restoration
These vibrant carved and painted hardwood posts with marine ply 'flames' and 'bird-heads' were created in 1997 and are part of the Brisbane City Council's Core Public Art Collection. They were fully restored in 2019.

Each artwork was cleaned and sealed to retain the original painted design, prior to the works being partially dismantled for restorative structural work and repainting and the manufacture of some missing components. Once re-installed the artworks were coated with polyurethane anti-graffiti clear as a protective coating against water penetration, graffiti, and exhaust fumes from traffic.

2019- Anzac Avenue Memorials Kallangur - General Maintenance
These Memorials featuring work in stone, cast-concrete, bronze, painted stainless steel and aluminium are featured along Moreton Bay Regional Council's Anzac Avenue from Kallangur to Mango Hill.

Vietnam Veterans MemorialA new, framed polycarbonate cover was made for the stainless steel medal plaque on this monument and defects in the rock were filled with colour-matched grout to maintain visual ammenity

Mango Hill Light Horse MemorialThe muzzle of the bronze rifle held by the Light Horse trooper was loose near the hand of the trooper, and was secured with stainless steel and epoxy to the sculpture to keep it secure

2019 - 'Hornibrook Highway Seat' by Jamie Maclean (2012) - General Maintenance
This steel and timber seat at Redcliffe Museum in Moreton Bay Regional Shire incorporates re-milled timber salvaged from the original Hornibrook Highway supported by laser-cut steel pylons that replicate the original art deco cast-concrete pylons at each end of the original bridge.
Reconditioned Seat: After cleaning all components, timber and steel sections were spot-sanded and filled and primed. The steel pylons were re-finished with automotive paint and anti graffiti coating, and timber elements were re-coated with acrylic-based timber finish
2019 - 'World Expo '88 Human Factor Figures' by John Underwood & Artbusters (1988):

'The Drover and His Mate' ,'Be Prepared' and' The Ramp'
Cultural Asset Services project-managed the footings construction and installation for these cast-bronze sculptures to three prominent locations in Brisbane. Originally made in fibre-glass by John Underwood & Artbusters, these popular sculptures were re-cast in bronze by Dean Rusling of Chalkos Fine Arts Foundry.
'The Drover and His Mate'
Gregory's Rest, RNA Showgrounds Installation of this tableau of sculptures was achieved by using stainless steel rods bored through the deck-boards into purpose-built concrete footings beneath the deck so the bronze figures appear to be 'freestanding'.

'Be Prepared'
Scout Place, Kangaroo Point The installation of the scout figure required the demolition of a section of the concrete lawn-edging to create a (deeper) colour-matched footing to secure the sculpture into position.

Eastern Entry Wall, Murarrie Rec. Reserve The skater figure is mounted to the existing the 3.2m high cast-concrete eastern signage wall of Murrarie Recreational Reserve on a stainless steel bracket secured by stainless pins and epoxy.

2019 - 'Navy Sentinels' - by Jamie Maclean (2011) - Refurbishment
These carved and painted figures at Carruthers Park Kallangur in the Moreton Bay Regional Shire, were created in 2011 to honour the
Centenary of the Royal Australian Navy. Each of the ten figures represents a decade in the 100 year history of the RAN.

Refurbished Figures: In 2019 the figures were fully refurbished, involving the removal and replacement of defective timber, colour-matched repainting of repaired areas, and the re-application of anti-graffiti clear coatings.
2019 - 'Forme Del Mito' by Arnaldo Pomodoro - General Maintenance.
Cultural Asset Services teamed up with Chalkos Fine Arts Foundry to pressure-clean and polish these four iconic bronze sculptures and to clean and repaint the base-plates as part of Brisbane City Council's Core Public Art Maintenance Program.

2018 - 'Gestation' by Baile Oaks - Removal, Restoration and Re-installation
This popular bronze sculpture from World Expo 88 needed to be removed from the Queen Street Mall for cleaning and restoration.

'Gestation' restored: The high volume of foot traffic on this site required the temporary restoration of granite paving to ensure pedestrian access and safety while sculpture was off-site.

With Cultural Asset Services as site and project Manager, Gestation’ was removed from Queen Street Mall in the Brisbane overnight, and restored at Chalkos Fine Art Foundry .

2017 - 'Morningside War Memorial' - Refurbishment of Memorial & Mosaic Seating Walls
The components of the Memorial to be restored for Brisbane City Council were: the in-ground mosaic and curved seating benches by artist Suzzane Holmann, the stone monolith with circular base and feature lettering at the base of the monolith, and the bronze plaque.

2016 - 'CBD Bronzes' - King George & Post Office Square - Restoration of Bronze Sculptures and Granite Plinth Cultural Asset Services Director Jamie Maclean was principal contractor, and project and site manager, for the refurbishment of these five significant CBD Bronzes located in King George Square and Post Office Square in Brisbane.

Each artwork was high-pressure cleaned, the bronzes highlighted and re-waxed and the granite plinths were partially dismantled, re-coloured and re-built, then grouted and nano-sealed. Bronze restoration work by Chalkos Fine Arts Foundry and stone restoration by Ceramica Mandala. Artworks:

2016 - BALD HILLS 'Suburban Centre Improvement Project' - Removal and full Restoration of all Street Furniture
In 2002, a suite of timber, steel and ceramic balustrades, noticeboard, seats and bollards was installed at Bald Hills Village on Brisbane's northside as part of the Brisbane City Council's Suburban Centre Improvement Project (SCIP) program.

In 2016, Cultural Asset Services undertook a full restoration program for all elements: removing each of the handcrafted functional artworks from site, and fully refurbishing each element as required including fully dismantling each work to replace defective timber and to address water issues at footpath level. The aim of the restoration is to extend the life of these site-specific works by at least ten years
2013 - Archive - 'Greenslopes State School Mural' by Jamie Maclean and students of GSS. (1993): Full Restoration
This 200 metre Heritage listed mural on the Logan Road retaining wall of Greenslopes State School was originally designed and painted by Jamie Maclean and students of the school in 1993. Originally depicting the history of the suburb of Greenslopes from the 'Big-Bang' in 47,000,000,000 BC to the year 1993, mural content was updated during refurbishment to the year 2013.
